Kevin Browne: Songs
Goodnight From a Distance
Our grandchildren live a long distance away. Once when we were visiting our oldest grandson said “see ya in the morning.” But it was our last day there, so he wouldn’t see us in the morning, which gave us a pang of sadness. Saying goodnight in person is the most enjoyable, but since that is not always possible I wrote this song. Griffin wrote a nice cello arrangement. He recorded it in Memphis and sent us the file, which was then added to the recording at Leon’s.
I hope you enjoy and thanks for listening.
This road lies between us and though my eyes need rest
I drive through the rain and my constant restlessness
If I had a pen and a paper you know, the letter I would write
This letter I would write
From a distance goodnight, from a distance goodnight
The miles separate us, time never wants to wait
I push through the darkness, although the hour is late
I see the stars, makes the sky seem so bright
It brings me such delight, the words I’d like to write
From a distance goodnight, from a distance goodnight
Pavement is so hard, unforgiving, my mind gets clouded and frail
I count every mile, every exit, just wishing my body could sail
-1st verse-
From a distance goodnight, from a distance goodnight
